Wild Brunch: Poems About How Creatures Eat by David L. Harrison and illustrated by Giles Laroche is a delightful introduction to a few animals and how they eat. Some familiar animals (hippos) and some new ones (aardvarks) will each be given a page to allow you to have a poetic peek into things. Not only are some familiar, like the fly, you do not usually get them in a book like this. They are broken down into types (land, air, etc) and a handful of poems will let you learn about the critter. Even if you are not interested in poetry, they are accessible and fun. Some have rhyme, some flow more easily but all are quick, simple but packed with goodies.
The illustrations are fun, sweet and while detailed, and have a simplistic nature to them that allows most ages to enjoy. There are good colors and are educationally fun via text and image.bThis is a good book to have in home, school or public library collections. I am planning on finding physical copies as I read it via an online reader copy. Of course, I will need to wait until mid-September 2024 for those physical copies, but it will be worth the wait.
Harrison has other scientific poetry books I plan on finding as I enjoyed this one. And when I was looking at other things they have done, I located A Tree Is a Community illustrated by Kate Cosgrove. I then looked at my online site and found a reader’s copy, so be prepared to find another Harrison review soon enough!
