Do you think, when it’s time for a chicken to lay her egg it’s a do or die moment? Like when a human really really has to go and there are four people ahead of you for the one working stall? I mean, does the chicken cross its legs (never mind the road) and squeeze the cheeks and say, “It’s not your turn yet?” (If you don’t know, like I didn’t, chickens can stand in line to wait to lay their eggs as, like anyone, they only want the best egg laying location and it could be busy/already in use).

Well, Therapy Chickens: Let the Wisdom of the Flock Bring You Joy by Tedra Hamel might not answer that question, but it can give you some pointers on a more happy life. Or at least it could teach you to “live like the chicken.” Scientific, personal and fun information and comments will guide you through things as if you were a chicken. Such as, when life is tough, you must remember chickens stand in line to lay eggs (and therefore it is possible that the above situation could happen) and you should be vigilant, be in tune with the surroundings around you, be skeptical and investigate. Not to mention after laying your egg, sing your egg song out loud! Trumpet your accomplishment. (But not before you are properly hydrated as it takes a lot to lay an egg). Plus there are a lot more pages after these first few things that probably are just as, if not more, inspiring!
I was skeptical when I saw the online link for this book. It has a cartoon chicken (for the cover) that looked like it belonged on my grandmother’s old cupboards as lining paper. It felt like it would be really dull and not keep my attention. However, it turned out to be something I thought would be a fun housewarming gift, a goofy get well gift, a teacher gift or some other odd time to give a gift-gift. I wasn’t even a quarter done before I thought, yeah, this works.

Even those cartoon images work. They are colorful, cute and fun (a chicken with sun tanning lotion anyone?). I could see them framed and in your guest bedroom, your half bathroom or kitchen. They might not be for everyone, with their old-school country chic look, but also modern tones and elements, but they could be appreciated by most people. There is an introduction by the author that talks about a lot of things, but also lets you know that they are chicken wranglers and use some personal experiences. You don’t have to finish in one sitting, just when you need a little pick-me-up or inspiration, but know you will find something on the pages that will make you think, giggle and go Hmmmmm.
