Summer Vamp (A Graphic Novel) by Violet Chan Karim is a fun book. It is not an OMG BEST EVER book, but fun. I enjoyed reading it. As an adult, I am not the intended reader, but I can see where kids will love the vampire angle and the ideas of “coming of age” in a silly and relatable way. And at the same time it is a “grandparent book” or “This is a nice book with nothing really bad happening so the grandparent will like it but the child reader will too.”
I am not personally a fan of the personality and/or all of the actions of our main character all the time, but their flaws are believable and relatable. The other characters are fun and cute. In fact, I like them as foils for the main character, but they have life outside of her. The idea of being the “odd person who likes odd things” is familiar, with the use of cooking as the activity that makes her “odd” is newer (though not unknown) and pairs well with the bubbly, colorful art. I might not go onto sequels (if they happen/have happened), but I will keep my eye out for other things they have done.
The cover gives you the illustration format. It has a modern graphic novel note, and manga/anime elements, colorful and not overly detailed. It is nice for those aged eight and up (probably to a young 12-13 year-old). Granted, there is not anything for me to say WOW I LOVED THIS OR THAT part. But it is an overall nice package.
