Bingo 10: Rage
Volumes 26 and 27 of the Blue Exorcist manga heavily feature a lot of wrath of various kinds. Self-loathing is especially prevalent, but there’s also jealousy, human-demon conflict, and sibling rivalry taken to an extreme.
The whole series both Rin and Yukio (twin brothers, and half-demon spawns of none other than Satan himself) have hated themselves for things about their background that they or may not have fully understood (and definitely not at the same time), as well as resentment against their twin for seeming to not have that problem (key word “Seeming”). There’s been a face off brewing for a while, and its now really happening.
The rest of the world is also at kind of a turning point. The demon are on the verge of breaking into the human realm, and that means Satan might be reviving any moment. Given the kind of adventure story this is, it’s likely that the revival happens and there’s an extended final major series of battles. It also turns out that an exorcism classmate might actually have an ancestor who made a personal sacrifice “to quell the anger” of one of the major demons; the here and now descendent might have to re-confront that same demon and subjugate him (and they’ve had some hostile encounters before).
I have to admit, I was getting to the point of getting sick of Yukio’s character in particular being so overly dramatic, even if it’s self-loathing based on trauma he doesn’t have info on. Why he isn’t given said info until it’s nearly too late is unclear, other than it works for the narrative because Rin whose always been the failure of the pair now has to save his brother since he’s got background info about their past Yukio doesn’t. This is a role-reversal from the beginning of the whole story. Yukio’s in the loser needing straightening out seat this time. The big question is, is it too late? For some things, probably, but for the important ones? We’ll have to see.
