The Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi was a big hit when it first appeared on the shelves of my bookstore, and I understood why, even though at the time I was just starting to get into graphic novels and fantasy was something I was reading again. It had a lot of pop and mystery. Things were fantasy, but had elements that were relatable, they even could be considered believable even though things were fantasy all the way. And the main character was also spunky and you could see yourself being her.
Though you should read in order, Amulet Volume 9: Waverider has a bit of standalone qualities. But do not miss reading volume 3 (which somehow I have done). And if it has been awhile since you read them, as it took forever to get this final book in the series out, it wouldn’t hurt to read them again. In fact, I think it’s been long enough so we have a new reading generation ready for it, as it could go as young as 8 (strong readers) but is more of an aged 10 and up (young 14) read.
In this volume, we wrap up what happens, we battle the monsters (mostly old, but a few new things) and it all works the way that fits the series. Maybe things were a little rushed and it ends on a “this chapter is closed but there is more to come” ending which is the only way it could end. And I think most people will be satisfied with how that is.
Bold and fun illustrations. For fans of Zita the Spacegirl and Mighty Jack.
