The visitors in We Are Definitely Human are odd, but adorable. Okay, maybe not adorable-adorable, but they are really nice and friendly, especially after how the humans, ah…other humans… are so friendly to them when helping them fix their “car.” The act of kindness has never been so humorous!
X. Fang’s story is as clever as it is cute. The idea of just being kind, just because, is not a new story, but one that bears repeating. And of course, if you can add some humor to things, why not? Nothing says that kindness has to be all serious. The illustrations are borderline cartoon and realistic, but lean towards the goofy, silly and oddball. They are not overly detailed or too pushy, nor are they lacking in anything that is needed.
The thing that I liked the most about things is how industrious and clever our visitors from, “not here” but Europe, are. They “make business”, “play sportsball” and “wear hat.” They remind us they are human and show us how human they are, even if they need a few tips about things like food needs to go inside you…. After all, Erurope is very different from the farm they land… are visiting. This humor will catch the attention of the reader (aged five and up) and tickle the adult reader as well. It is a great read aloud, good for anytime reading and could work well if you are doing a school unit of things like kindness and learning what it means to be a good human.
