What if the trope about every book being a new adventure happened literally? This is what happens in The Book of Doors. Cassie Andrews lives an unassuming life working in a bookstore when she is given a strange book called The Book of Doors. She soon discovers that, while in possession of the book, she can open a door into any place she can imagine. At first, she and her best friend Izzy enjoy going on instant adventures by simply opening the front door to their apartment. However, they soon discover that there are many other magical books in the world, and many people who would do anything to get them. With the help of Drummond Fox, a stranger who knows better than anyone how terrifying some of these book hunters can be, they will fight to keep themselves safe from their pursuers.
This book grew on me as I read it. At first, I thought it was just okay. But as the book went on and the stakes got higher, I was drawn into the story and the lives of the many characters. While this is certainly a book for book lovers, it’s also a fun little urban fantasy adventure, a story about loss and finding your people after that loss. There are a couple of moments when it’s painfully obvious that this is a male author writing women. Aside from that, it’s a great little read.
