Cold is different for everyone. Poetry is different for everyone. And in Tim McCanna’s picture book, Cold, we get a lovely, lush illustrated book that has a story within the art as well as complimenting the text that deals with both subjects. The poetry is how the rhyming text with each page gives us a short burst of poetic information about how in cold there is life and how the cold itself is a character that moves about, leading us to the different places the images show us.

We will see the ocean, forests, and more. We will see all types of animals and a young child and their family, all dealing with the cold. There are also extras included which allow the book to go from a sweet poetic tale to scientific facts all at the same time. It also allows the book to grow with your child. These facts tell about cold, environmental changes, and how you can help. This is a small package that packs a punch. Illustrations are by Ramona Kaulitzki. Their work feels a combination of old school painting and modern technology. The two are colorful, earthy toned images that are simple, but hold a lot of information. You read them as much as the text itself.
As I read via an online reader’s copy, I am not sure of the dimensions, but I am going to assume it will be a nice sized book that will be great for a story time read aloud, or for a cozy solo, quiet time read. Due November 2024.
