I like graphic novels, enjoy some fantasy and if a story has comedy and adventure, that is not a turn off. And The Witch’s Throne volume one by Cedric Caballes is all the above.
Set up as if you are playing a Dungeons & Dragon like online game, there are multiple stories going along simultaneously with about a dozen main characters. However, it is not always clear when you are moving onto them, and with the several characters and several story-lines all at once, things can become a bit muddled at times. However, just take it slow and enjoy as you follow the characters who are off to fight in the challenges that will allow for four heroes to stop the witch that is causing evil. Along the way they will learn things about themselves, the world and friendship.
There is fantasy adventure and action, some violence, and situations that are not for sensitive readers. While so far nothing has happened that an aged 10 plus reader couldn’t handle, there is potential for more mature situations and some of the characters (particularly the females) are a bit sexualized (but Grom has some abs that shouldn’t be on a cartoon male elf character. Especially with that eye patch (swoon!)).
As it is a graphic novel the illustrations push things along as much as the text, which runs more along the lines of conversation and internal thoughts. Since there is a manga style, those illustrations set the tone and give off the humor that text does not always give you. Things are not too busy or too minimalist and have good (if not slightly repetitive) color and images.
Overall, this is a fun read and I’m looking forward to reading more.
