I have been trying to read The Adventures of Team Pom V01: Squid Happen and The Adventures of Team Pom V02: The Last Dodo for I do not know how long! I found an online reader copy ages ago, and when I recently uncovered it, unlike the others that are older and have been deactivated, these two never went away. And I am glad it did not, as Isabel Roxas has one funny story series on their hands.
Publisher description says for book one: it features three questing kids, a lonely giant squid, dramatic synchronized swimming routines, nefarious rats in bowler hats, mayhem and pigeons. And not only that, one of the girls can speak to those pigeons, one must be a certified genius (just look at all the great ideas she has) and the other is though she is tiny, she is mighty! A real boss gal! The three become friends after needing two others for a club at their local YMCA-like hangout, but it works out that the three are the perfect combination. Oh sure they are not athletic, or the pigeon routine never works out, and a giant squid is stealing their snacks, but so what? Of course, there is more to the story than just three girls and their pets. There are evil mice, a villain named Steve, there are snacks and one very interesting vial of serum. In book two, there are more shenanigans. This time our three gals are trying to stop Steve and C.A.O.S, from building a Dodo army. The antics are fun, silly and clever, but also the other kind of chaos as well.
Best for probably ages 8 and up, this graphic novel could also be read to most ages and everyone will be wanting more of Roberta, Ruby, and Agnes in book three (due unknown).
The artwork mixes a classic 1970s feeling (think Smart Susie Sunset from Billy Jo Jive on Sesame Street) and a more modern look as well. This combination is perfect for the tone of the story. It allows for minimal color and details, but what is there tells the story/fills in the blanks of the text.
