Hugo’s Haunted Handbook by Dave Whamond is a cute story about getting rid of a “scary ghost” who maybe is not as scary as you think, or as “gone” as you might hope. The humor is modern, with some cleverness for both the aimed reader (stronger age six/seven to around age 10) and adults. Along the lines of Fitz and Cleo by Jonathan Stutzman and Simon and Chester by Cale Atkinson. Things are simple, and the artwork is what you need to watch so you know that what Hugo is saying is probably not as accurate as he would hope. I would say that many of us can relate to that “pesky ghost” in our lives, as I was likening our ghost to a kid sibling. You think you have outwitted them, but they are still there (which came last Easter, I was very thankful I hadn’t gotten rid of my ghost. I mean kid sister!)

I liked the humor, such as ghosts are terrified of waffles, so throw lots of waffles at them (but they always come back after you restock). And the realization that there are waffle crumbs on our ghosts sheet….um body, is a classic joke. This is just a 101 fun, easy read for that aimed reader. And this is all enhanced by basic, simple, good detailed (not crowded) images. And while I see sequels, I am not sure I would read more, but I do know your ghost, goblins and human children will want more of Hugo and his friends.
Though available to read, I read this via an online reader copy.
