When I read about Hotel REM it sounded like it was going to go in a completely different direction than what the actual graphic novel turned out to be. It also had a different feeling from the cover. And while, yes you can find some of the story out from the cover, this is a book that also is one that you should not judge it by the cover.
Zack Keller wrote an interesting coming of age story. The colors and details of the illustrations by Gabriel Bagnoli are fun, the tone is a mixture of a classic comic/graphic novel with modern day elements. We follow Remington, a human boy around 12-years-old who is taking over the hotel business from his parents. But this is no usual hotel, it is where your dreams go when you have woken up. And Rem’s parents have told him to always make the guest happy and to always follow the book. But when one of the staff members throws the book out (literally) Rem must rely on his training, his common sense, his wits and his staff to help him out. Then comes the most famous guest of all, who will give the hotel a real publicity boost, or a big thumbs down if his every whim isn’t catered too. Then again, should it actually happen? Will this be a five star take over or will Rem put the hotel under?

This book has its moments with the fantasy elements, a bit of the dysfunctional family (but they are fun, if not one a real nightmare) and even a little romance. And while it is not for everyone, there is something for everyone inside. If you like Hotel Transylvania, this is most likely right up your alley. Best for ages strong 8-9 to around 12-young 13.
