Exit Strategy is the second of my two least favorite Murderbot stories, but I really need to put an asterisk on that because they’re still outstanding. Overall, I would say this one is the worst because it meanders the most. There’s a lot of Murderbot sitting around thinking about security protocols, and honestly that works, but it’s my “least” favorite because it has to stand in comparison to so much other incredibly good stuff.
Murderbot returns to HaveRatton station just in time to be almost apprehended by station security. In short order, it learns that members of PreservationAux are present, and from there quickly learns that Dr. Mensah has been taken by GrayCriss Corporation. Naturally, Murderbot doesn’t take kindly to its favorite human being taken by corporate goons, and murder ensues.
The little-else I have to say about this is why this is my least favorite Murderbot story. It’s still outstanding and you should read it, but it’s just not got a ton going on in it compared to the others. You could find and replace the sci-fi moments and it would turn into a generic cop or spy drama. I’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes without anything else to say soooooooooooooooo still 10/10, it’s just such a great story. Read these books.
