This book is a sequel, set in the same world as the first one. (A future run by robots) It follows Roz again, this time as she is taken from her home and her son and put on a farm to work. She wishes to escape and return to her family on her island, but the two children who live on the farm discover her intentions before she can run.
This book is truly adorable, and a good reminder of human compassion, especially in today’s world. The children are written realistically, they believe they can do anything, and fail. Importantly for their realism, they remain optimistic, and try again. Books often get children wrong, and this was nice. Children are ridiculous all the time, and they deserve to be represented as the insane creatures they so often are. Additionally, there wasn’t much worldbuilding in the last book but this one was so incredibly filled with it, in a subtle way. The way Roz navigates the world around her showcases it so well, and I adore it. It is, again, a simplistic book more directed for children, but if you need a pick-me-up this is the book for you.
In the end, this book deserves 4.6 stars, it wasn’t as good as the last one, but it was actually (shockingly) a good sequel. Sequels are always worse, but this could be used as its own story and be amazing still. Also, a book filled with adoptive love is just adorable, and not used nearly enough.
