I’m so glad I finally took the plunge (into the river wink wink nudge nudge) and started this series!

Peter Grant is a police officer at the beginning of his career in London, a career that seems destined more for the never-ending paperwork division than the exciting chasing down dastardly criminals type. One night he receives some crucial information about a very strange murder from a witness who happens to be a ghost. This brings Peter to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Nightingale, the man responsible for investigating all magical and supernatural crimes in London. More mysterious murders follow and all the manifestations of the rivers of London are acting up. Also vampires are real.
Urban fantasy has always been my jam so I knew going in that I’d probably enjoy this highly recommended book. I’ve not ever been to London so I’m guessing some of the locations and slang passed me by but it was obvious the author has a deep love for and knowledge of the setting. I did laugh that Peter just seems so calm about questioning a ghost, just another day on the job, but he is presented as having more curiosity about everything than is maybe good for him. If I met a ghost in the middle of the night I don’t think I’d be so calm. I assume my lack of chill is why I haven’t yet been asked to join our American equivalent, the X-Files. I’m very excited that there are so many more books in the series waiting for me, graphic novels too!
