Mark Fearing (if that is their real name and not their ghost writer name) must have been one strange child and now a stranger adult. A child that was haunted by the best of the best hauntings, ghosts and ghouls whom they made friends with and shared with us now. They introduce us to those friends in their series about the town of Feral.
Freya is our detective of the odd things in this town called Feral. They know the truth (or so they think) about all the crazy, wild, scary and downright spooky events. Bikes can take you farther than the corner store, a camping trip can turn hairy, you need to follow the rules, be wary of strangers with ice cream trucks in the middle of the forest, and doing your homework is always a good idea. Set up in a Twilight Zone like situation, Frights from Feral V01 Welcome to Feral (volume two is also available now), we have our narrator giving you the lead-in, the main story, and then the reader must shake off the insanity for the next round. For kids in middle school, ages 10-13, just like the monsters… I mean characters … of the stories.
Cartoon, off-beat, and goofy illustrations give us spooky, but are lighter in tone to counter the spook factor. Children have big eyes (all the better to see in detention), the colors do not pop, but they are not diluted, and details work to set the mood, so beware! I mean, watch where you step. Ah, um.. I mean…. well just be careful okay?
Lock your doors, turn up the lights, surround yourself with garlic, and never invite a stranger in!
