Ember is the child of both Light and Dark Fae, which means she belongs to neither of their worlds. She makes her living dealing with minor supernatural issues for folks in the greater Seattle Area. However, when her best friend’s little brother goes missing, Ember is pulled into a world she doesn’t know how to navigate and a lot of danger. Help appears in the form of Hearne who recruits both Ember and her friend into his agency. Ember may actually have a found a place where she might belong if she can survive long enough to see their next mission.
I went into this expecting a paranormal romance with a little mystery and instead got an urban fantasy mystery with hints of romance. Not that I’m complaining, though I actually would have liked a little more romance or at least for the relationships to develop a little more as the pacing of the relationship felt a little off. I enjoyed the book a lot even if some things were predictable. It had good world building, and the characters really pulled me in. The characters are probably the most memorable part of the book though, and it was a little slow to get going. I don’t know if that’s because it’s setting things up for future books in the series or what, but I’m intrigued enough that I’ll read the next one in the series at least. It’s definitely the sort of book that you read while your traveling or just need a quick distraction for a bit. Three out of five stars.
