I first read the graphic novel, Just Jamie by Terri Libenson in 2019. I only went back for a second round as I could not remember anything about it. In fact, it was to the point that I even questioned if I had read it. Well, I did have one image in my head, but it did not help much in remembering the story.
However, my rating of five back then, is now 3.5 to 4 rating. This book was good, and I liked how the characters from other stories have cameos until they “become real” at the end, but I was not sure where in the timeline of the characters when Jamie’s story is happening. If I remember right, Jamie does not seem to show up other than in this book, other than short cameos in the background so I am not sure if/how they play a role in the larger theme. I still feel it is a little idealistic but still realistic. And like the others, it can be a stand alone title, but since it does tie in with other books, you should read it with the others. It is a good addition to the Emmie and Friends series.
If you have read one of Libenson’s graphic novels, well you have only read one graphic novel, but the skeleton is the same, Middle School and trying to be cool without making yourself look too much like a fool. In Just Jamie we see how one girl is losing her friends when one decides that Jamie is not cool enough for them. The other three girls have “grown up” but Jamie is well, just Jamie. And of course, the idea of being yourself and real friends will find you is the lesson, but there is nothing new or wild. However, don’t give up Libenson just yet. Their style has matured (also the formats they use) and each one is unique in its own way.
