Garlic and the Vampire:
Garlic is a sentient young garlic bulb. She lives in a village with other sentient vegetables, including her best friend, Carrot. They all farm and sell non-sentient vegetables at the farmer’s market with their caretaker, Witch Agnes. Everything is peaceful until they notice smoke coming from the tower of the abandoned old castle, and everyone is worried that a vampire has moved in! Since everyone believes that Garlic will naturally be immune to a vampire’s powers, she is nominated to travel to the castle and investigate. However, Garlic is scared to death! How is she going to fight a vampire?
This graphic novel was utterly adorable. The art style is cute and the story is a good message for children. I can’t wait to read this with my 8-year-old niece. It is a perfect Fall cozy read!
Garlic and the Witch:
Garlic wakes up one morning and notices that she now has FIVE fingers instead of her normal four. She rushes to Witch Agnes, who explains that she suspected for a while that her vegetable children may eventually turn human. Garlic isn’t sure what to make of all of this, so she goes to visit her friend the Count. It turns out that Witch Agnes is very close to making a vegetarian blood substitute for him, but she needs a special ingredient from the Magic Market, which is pretty far away. Once again, brave little Garlic sets out on a journey she doesn’t feel entirely prepared for.
These graphic novels were just so good. Definitely not just for kids. I think my husband will really enjoy them as well.
CBR 15 – Edibles. Most of the characters in these graphic novels are literal vegetable children. They also farm and sell non-sentient vegetables at a farmer’s market.
