Full disclosure: I did not read every page of The Best Dog: Hilarious to Heartwarming Portraits of the Pups We Love but did read the majority. The book is a nice art/coffee table book. It is a good gift for the dog lover. A few lines to a paragraph accompany each of the dogs and their photograph. The stories range from “this dog likes parmesan cheese on their food” to “this dog, that I rescued two days ago, alerted me to the fact the farms barn was on fire.” You will see familiar breeds, the not so familiar, and the ever-popular Mutt. Some dogs have overbites, some two-colored eyes, some were rescued from dire situations, but all are loveable to look at.
Aliza Eliazarov and Edward Doty are dog lovers. They love all types of dogs, but as the end shows, they have their own preferences. The photographs are nice. They are expressive and enjoyable. As it is an art book with over 200 pages, you might not want to do a sit down and read all at once. Just browse, enjoy the puppies and the young at heart older dogs. Since I found this as an online reader copy, the breaks in the pages were a little off (the format is image had “cuts” in the flow of some pages). The dogs presented are doing doggy things. So yes, they are flopped about, and doggy parts are in full view (if that kind of thing is an issue for you or the receiver of a gift).
