Sarah Sax created their debut graphic novel (due late June/early July 2023), Picture Day (The Brinkley Yearbooks) in a modern format but took a classic theme. The idea of trying to become popular, but there are still pitfalls at the top, has been done before. But with the characters, the ways they talk and act, are completely modern.
We have Olivia (now Viv as it is “catchy” and memorable) trying to be seen. And the day of picture day she does just that. Along the way she and her mom argue (and frankly if I spoke to my mom like that, I would get more than my phone taken from me for a week!), she starts losing her real friends, and realizes that maybe she must actually follow what she preaches (the be your true self, that a favorite online-poster of hers is always saying). And then we have her friends Al (with her flaming red hair and all her crazy brothers), who might have to wear her itchy dress for picture day, but nobody will see her less than “lady-like” shoes!
And Milo, the sensitive, geeky one, who misses his college-aged brother for more than just the help he gives with Milo’s projects. And we have the girl with a vlog or maybe it’s her parents (I missed who it belongs to) but her videos can make or break your popularity, as our trio will learn. And there is a fun “old school” nod. The three friends are fans of an older show about roller skating superhero-like characters. So, roller skating is back, and as hard as ever!
Bold, graphic novel colored and detailed illustrations. There might be some “unrealistic over-the-top” elements, but that just makes the serious have less edges. Overall, well done, though maybe not my favorite, but one I do recommend.
