When I first saw the title Little Mole Gives Thanks I thought, “Well isn’t it a bit early for a Thanksgiving book?” And then I realized, um… the book is being promoted on Edelweiss and they will promote a book early so you can read and enjoy and start promoting early. Duh! And then I realized that it is due mid-late August 2023, so in the book world, that is basically right around the corner.
Then I realized it is not really a Thanksgiving story as in turkey and Pilgrims and pumpkin pie and stuffing kid of Thanksgiving. It is the Thanks part of Thanksgiving. You see, Mole wants to through a party for the special people in his life. Only to find out that they are all busy and cannot join. When his friends come together to help him, then we learn about true friendship. Um… okay. I mean great, he learns that his friends are important, but I would be a little upset if my friend only thought of me because the other people they wanted could not come to the party. But I also understand what Glenys Nellist is trying to say: Do not forsake real friends when trying to do a good thing for others.
Sally Garland’s illustrations redeems any bumps I might have had in the story. They are sweet, cute, not overly colorful in the “overwhelming sense” but are not muted either. They have good details and not overly crowded. They are cozy. Overall, this is a nice book. It might not become a classic, but it could become a favorite in your house. Best for ages at least three and up, but probably better five and up.
