Mayumi is a former member of the Demonslayer Guild. She lives in her family’s cabin in the middle of nowhere so she can safely hunt demons on her own. She slowly comes to realize just how lonely she is. When she was a young child, she was saved from a demon by a Duskwalker. Duskwalkers are monsters who are typically 7 feet tall, covered in fur or feathers, and aren’t terribly intelligent unless they have eaten a lot of humans. Ever since he saved her, the Duskwalker has looked over Mayumi and become a protector of sorts. One day, she realizes he is watching her, and they establish a friendship that becomes much more. The whole “Beauty and the Beast, but he stays a Beast” thing is intriguing.
I really enjoy this series, and not just because of the smut. Opal Reyne has established a really interesting world, where there is a conflict between humans in the cities, and the demons of the wilderness. The Demon King is a terrifying villain. The Duskwalkers are all just adorably awkward and confused by their human mates. I love that the Duskwalkers are starting to establish their own community. Opal Reyne has announced that there will be nine books in this series, and I can’t wait to read all of them!
