Literally, between the time I read the book, and the time I sat down to write a thumbnail review, I forgot who the killer was. I had to look it up, and it couldn’t have been more than a day or two.
So… that probably says the most about this one.
This is set 20 years after Mina-the-protagonist’s twin sister disappeared from her bed in the middle of the night. Lane, a PI, turns up in town to search for her, since there’s reward money on offer. He is duped into helping search for another little girl who went missing at the same time, Mina’s best friend’s sister (because Mina has no truck with PIs). There are a fair few plot strands that all weave nicely together by the end.
Honestly, this novel is pretty well done, with the random little secrets all small towns have managing to run interference and misdirection for 20 years, precluding any closure for the families of the missing girls. A decent first novel, which manages to hit the emotional beats without bludgeoning the reader with a shovel, just… fell right out of my head the minute I put it down.
