Not for me, I’m sure it was great. (Or was it???) I might have liked this if it was still 2009. It seriously felt like time-traveling back to when I thought I liked dystopias, and when they were everywhere. Also, I just don’t think this author is for me. I read another book from him a couple years ago and also didn’t care about it very much.
This is a YA sci-fi/dystopia about a boy and his dog who live in a place where there are no women, and all men can hear each other’s thoughts. The boy can even hear his dog’s thoughts. And then . . . a girl shows up. This leads to revelations, and danger, and I just, I can’t even retroactively summon up the energy to summarize it. There were aliens, but not enough aliens. There were too many men (and yes, I know part of the point of the book is to criticize the expression of masculinity, which I am all for!). The dog SPOILERS fucking dies END SPOILERS. I don’t know, I might watch the movie. It’s not getting a sequel so there wouldn’t be much investment on my part, and I love both Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.
I won’t be reading the sequels. I had a hard enough time getting through this one. I read the book summaries on Wikipedia for them because I was curious how the story would end, and now I’m pretty confident in my decision.
