I’m still a million years behind in Saga and this will be the last installment I read for 2022, which is quite the note to end on. As it’s the tale end of the holiday season and I still have Christmas on my brain, to sum up my feelings I will steal from the immortal words of Kevin McCallister as he looks at Buzz’s girlfriend’s photograph, “Woof.”
This installment of the series is a doozy.
Hazel has finally been reunited with her family and they are pressing ahead to try to stay ahead of those hunting them and find a place where they can be safe. While refueling on Phang they befriend an adorable race of meerkat-like beings who are also doing all they can to survive. Everyone is forced as usual to make hard choices in unwinnable situations and consequences are steep.
This volume is full of loss and heartbreak and I still have not emotionally recovered. It’s amazing that there are so many different arcs and characters and all of them are moving and engaging and you remain on the edge of your seat to see how it will all turn out.
The end of this one is particularly haunting, I still have literal goosebumps about it. It’s the kind of thing that you’ll remember at a random part of your day and feel your heart dip all over again. Since I’m so behind on reading it I already have the next three volumes at the ready, but I’m hesitant about going ahead. Someone tell me that it’ll be less sad. Please?
