Bunnygirl: The First Adventure by Holly Jayne was a sample I read off Edelweiss. When the book comes out in February 2023, I will be finding the rest, as it ended on a minor cliffhanger. The whole book is meant for fairly early readers, so nothing majorly drastic happens, but you know that the diary our girl Bea wants is coming and there will be something that makes her into Bunnygirl.
The publisher description calls the artwork of Jayne “kawaii feeling” and I will just say, everything is so stinking pink and cute and sugary and simple and fun and maybe not over the top but darn close to it. In other words, in the kawaii style. The publisher description also says that the book was “inspired by the creator’s love of all things 80s including Hello Kitty, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, retro comic books, and Lisa Frank.” And you can see that. Sanrio style, with a dash of Polly Pocket and bright says it all really.
The story is straight forward, Bea (a little girl) loves helping her friends. She loves her dog, Woofs, and bunnies. She talks to her cactus plant, and it likes her voice (lucky her, mine bit me), and thinks she will be a good doctor as she likes helping people and her friends (not all humans). She finds a bunny with a sore paw and helps them; they all have a few adventures and that ends what I had access too.
The age this is aimed at can vary due to the fact it is a comic book-picture book and the style of writing is early to proficient early reader. All ages could be read to but would probably work best one-on-one instead of a group setting. Yet, as it was an online reader copy that I read, I am not sure of the final products looks.
