Do you want a hug but are not sure what kind of hug you want? Then find The Catalogue of Hugs. This sparse book is fun for kids and adults alike. You can find all types of hugs in the pages. We had the classic, the leg, the tantrum, and the necklace. You see child and all types of family members (parents, grandparents, and yourself) getting and giving hugs.
Joshua David Stein, Augustus Heeren Stein and Elizabeth Lilly are the people behind this book. The text is only a small handful of words, and the art is similar small. There are colors, but details are almost nonexistent. The sketches are sweet, simple and capture the emotion. Little to no real action occurs (unless you count hugging as an action)
therefore the active child might not be interested, but it would make a fun bedtime or quiet time read. a fun inclusion is that we see all types of people (of color, ages, sizes, religions, and even needs like a prosthetic leg) Said for ages two to five, the older learning to read could start to do some solo reading.
A page of other types of hugs not included are suggested at the end. I am not sure if there will be examples as I read as a reader copy from Edelweiss, but I think those are left for your imagination.
Since I need about 50 more words, I will say that I was surprised at one of the hugs included. It is the tantrum hug. I would have thought only positive hugs would be
included. However, since you only get the idea of “This is a necklace hug” or “You can do a backpack hug” the concept is not explained.
