In March 2023 In A Patch of Grass will be published. Hopefully. Because if it does not, I will be most upset at the publisher W W Norton! This science book by Fran Hodgkins and illustrated by Dan Tavis (fantastically I might add) is a must have. You learn about spiders, worms, slugs, even a wuff!
Set as a movie production, Stephen Spielbug directs a not always the most cooperative cast (Robin calls out sick, worm misses its cue, slug tries to clean up its “mess”)
as David Antenborough narrates the comings, goings (such as one grasshopper that will be calling their agent) around us. Or at least in a patch of grass. The science mixes in with humorous fiction. The introduction to the mysterious world of grass is wonderfully told. And there are a few surprises along the way.
This humor can be enjoyed by both child and adult (the ending has a bit of an adult joke, that is totally rated G). And it is all delightfully presented with the art of Tavis. Colorful, detailed, and matches the text perfectly, the reader/listener goes on a marvelous journey. The pieces will fit both the lover of nature, humor, and adventure. Even the movie buff can find some things to enjoy.
All ages can enjoy, but in stages. It is a longer picture book so the younger reader/listener might not be the audience for a read-aloud, but they can read the illustrations. The aged best suited probably would be at least five and up. Due to the information (there is also a glossary at the end that gives you the different types of beings we meet and their resume) it can be adapted as your child grows. Great for a classroom, this could go up to second or even third grade. Having read on Edelweiss I am not sure of the format, but I am assuming a usual picture book size. Rating 4.5as I wanted more!
