I am going through a stressful time work wise and personal life, so have retreated to books i know i enjoy.
I have certainly read this in the past, but it has probably been a decade. In recent years i have been more interested in other strands of the Discworld than the witches.
This is the second book in the witches line, or the third if you incorporate Granny Weatherwax in Equal Rites. It takes the three witches of Wyrd Sisters and mixes in stories and holidays abroad. One of the things i enjoy about Pratchett books is the multiple layers- these books are enjoyable in their story, but awareness of particular English activities and complaints adds another layer- the little jokes.
The story starts with the death of Desiderata, witch and fairy godmother. She knows there is unfinished business and bequeaths her wand to Magrat, the wet hen of the wyrd sisters. Meanwhile in far off Genua, another fairy godmother manipulates stories to create the circumstances she wants.
There is a certain amount of psychology going on- Desiderata sets it up so the other two witches- Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax- join Magrat on the journey to Genua.
This is a book about the narrative power of stories- how they drive themselves along and their inevitabilities. The story of the witches journey to Genua is of many stories, and how the witches subvert the narratives.
Once they get there they must handle the stories that have set in motion by the other grandmother.
I enjoyed re-reading this. The travel adventures were entertaining and the overall point of the story is to make your own choices and not follow the projected story path.
