This is apparently a hot new series. I had no idea when my friend recommended it to me. I tried to borrow this first book from the library and found a whole bunch of people waiting in front of me. I was excited when I finally got it though!
It actually took me a while to get into it though. We meet the main character Feyre hunting in the woods. That part I was OK with. She seemed to hunt with honor and needed the animals for food. Then she got home. Wow, I nearly stopped reading after pages and pages of her horrible family. They were mostly all assholes, and they treated Feyre like shit.
Thankfully the story shifts when Feyre is basically blackmailed / kidnapped by some fantastical beast and taken to the land of the faeries. She’s kind of a hostage in the house of Tamlin, who is one of the High Fae. There is unfortunately something terrible going on in the faerie world. You can tell quickly that Tamiln and Feyre are falling in love, and I’m ok with it. It’s not quick and stupid, it takes time and they actually interact with each other and fight and talk and stuff.
Along the lines of “something terrible going along in the faerie world”, there’s basically a curse.
I read a review of the book where someone said “if you tell Feyre not to do something, she’ll go do it”, which was pretty true in the book. The person who read the review did not like the book. I liked it, but I can see their negative points. Don’t go into this series thinking it’s the newest most amazing story ever. It’s interesting, and it kept me reading. Sometimes that’s all I want in a book!
