I did not think it was humanly possible for me to not love something by T. Kingfisher, but here it is. This got recommended to me by a few people after I loved “What Moves the Dead.” I can honestly say I was not feeling this one. It dragged so much. Took me a week plus to finish it because it was just not holding my interest. I gave up understanding anything and just adored Foxy, Skip, and Tomas though.
“The Twisted Ones” follows a woman named Mouse who goes to clean out her dead grandmother’s home. While there she comes across a diary written by her stepgrandfather, Cotgrave. And in it he tells her about The Twisted Ones and leads her to try to find something called “The Green Book” No, not that one. But one that is linked back to Arthur Machen’s “The White People.” No not that kind.
Short review, I thought this book was trying too hard and not engaging with my brain enough to feel really scared as I should have been about reading the descriptions of the wandering effigies and white people. I just thought the book dragged and them skipped way ahead. I definitely thought the mood setting was good, but the explanations were not and I just gave up. And reading about Mouse finding stuff and cleaning it out did not appeal to me. I think though I finally gave up when the book shifted to Cotgrave’s manuscript. Maybe it was the different fonts that threw me off or maybe it was Mouse’s interruptions into parts of the things she was reading, but at that point of the book I hit a firm, geez, I do not care about this book anymore.
This book started a slump in me that is hard to shake. I re-read some older books I have finished before, but never posted a review on, but hope I can shake this off. Nothing appeals to my brain right now.
I read this for Cannonball Read 14:

- This was recommended to me by a few friends who are fans of T. Kingfisher. Mental note to never trust them again.
