For a short novel, a shorter review…but also this is probably the one that broke me.
WHAT on earth is going on in this novel? Having read the original short story that inspired it, I would assume that an editor would do some casual research (or less-than-casual research, given that I assume these books have done very well for themselves) and create a situation that holds up to some scrutiny. Instead we are left with some laughably ridiculous romance set ups, even for Romancelandia where many weird things go.
If I remember correctly through my blizzard-like blind rage for the main plot, Hannah is a bisexual commitmentphobe scientist, who does work on like, rovers for Mars. That’s why she needs to go to the Arctic circle to test her recent doodad that’ll help robots survive for longer in the icy lands of space. Or something. It’s not really that relevant, she’s a scientist who went to Caltech and has to do some science in the cold.
Only the mean (seemingly independently wealthy) scientist who scuttles her plans ((view spoiler)) is there to put a damper in all of that! Grr!
But wait! He’s right to have done that because it’s apparently well known that it’s super dangerous in the Artic at that time, and Hannah doesn’t have the sort of intelligence that lets her research that herself. Or ask anyone about it?
AND THEN she falls into a crevasse and mean scientist is there to save her (because he decided to spend his vacation time hanging around the area in case she needed saving omfg) and she just…chills out in the freezing weather? without getting hypothermia? asdfghjkasdfghjk I can’t
