Somehow I got myself into another series! This happens to me a lot. I feel like it might’ve been a Kindle First though? I’m not sure. It could’ve also been a “you’ve read Joy Ellis books before, so you might like this one” too. Who knows? I have so many books on my TBR list, so it’s hard to remember where they all came from!
Anyway, it’s right up my alley. It’s a British detective (or whatever they’re called – DCI, DI… I can’t keep track), and he has a troubled past. That’s my jam. I always say that if someone isn’t getting murdered in a book, I’m not interested.
Ooh I just looked at the title and he’s a DCI. Anyway, DCI Ballard is nearing retirement, which is a weird place to start a series, but we’ll see where this goes! He has a team of cops who believe in him, and a new scary case to solve.
Unfortunately, it seems like the case that’s haunted DCI Ballard for over two decades is related to their newest case. When they start to investigate their new case, members of the team start getting weird photos of the earlier case’s crime scenes. BUT – the crime scene photos are from PRIOR to the crime scene. Obviously they’re coming from someone related to the crimes. It’s creepy.
Then, the new (/ maybe old?) killer starts to basically stalk the DCI and his team. Some of them get photos, some of them get attacked, and the DCI’s personal life gets dragged into the crime. I liked the way it all wrapped up.
I will definitely read the next book in this series. 3.5 stars
