CW: homophobia, reference to past transphobia as before, but newly we have eating disorders, reference to past self harm, past bullying
As you can tell from the content warnings, things are getting serious and not in a cute “will you be my boyfriend” sort of way. Charlie has deep seated demons that are coming to light, and Nick has his issues as well.
Before we get there, though, there’s a fun jaunt to Paris (because this is a UK based school, in case you forget, and “school trip to another country” is accomplished by way of a BUS). Nick speaks fluent French because his (awol) father is French. Charlie cannot deal (none of us will be able to deal when Kit Connor busts that out, if they go with that plot line). There is a party where no one is drinking (everyone is drinking) and Harry (the cartoonishly homophobic former friend of Nick) comes up to apologize to Charlie for being homophobic.
Charlie, to his credit, doesn’t accept the apology as such because, well, you don’t to accept an apology just because someone gives one to you.
But that’s the last high point in this series, as things start to spiral for Charlie. And look, I don’t think all stories need to be entirely happy. I can see why Oseman wanted to deal with some heavier issues. But the graphic comic medium that she’s chosen–either the length, or the sparseness of the style–can’t quite take the weight of the items that she’s chosen to portray.
