Agatha May really likes the Anglerfish, and we learn about that in Agatha May and the Anglerfish by Nora Morrison and Jessie Ann Foley.
Now, I like the Anglerfish but in mid-December 2022 you can find a gal who really likes them. Agatha is a kid who has trouble sitting still in class. Their fingers are messy. They decide to feed when it is not lunch time and they are afraid that when the class picks sea creatures for their school project, hers will be chosen. And to no one’s surprise but Agatha, her pick is still available. The grand and noble Anglerfish. And nobody prepares more than our gal. She is ready and raring to go. Sure, sharks are cool and who does not like an octopus? But she is going to dazzle and amaze. And sure enough, the other girls are pretty excited, too, after they learn the wonders of the fish (I admit, I did not know some of the facts presented myself).
This funny story about the passions we have and where they can lead us, is illustrated by Mika Song. They are sweet, funny, and not simple, but not crowded. They can be busy, but not overwhelmingly so. And they have some clever little images (like Agatha interviewing a person in a wet suit). Sure, the adult reader might be a little exasperated by Agatha’s “spunk” shall we say? But you cannot say Agatha does not give it their all.
This could work well as a one-on-one read with a child who likes oceans/sea creatures, and you are a little tired of reading about sharks, dolphins, and coral, or have exhausted all your choices. And of course, it would be a fun one to have in a classroom or school library. This is a book I love because it is different, but familiar at the same time. For at least ages five and up.
