lore olympus vol 1 cover

I don’t think I could possibly wait for all of these to be published in print

Lore Olympus: Volume One by Rachel Smythe

December 6, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

A fair warning: this was lovely, but it is a very expensive way to read these comics–only episodes #1-25 are in this volume, and something like 160 have been published online. I’m happy to support the author! I can’t tell how to do so on the Webtoons website. A fanfic sent me to this series–a pretty explicit one, at that. I don’t think I needed much convincing though. Along with Beauty and the Beast, and Pride and Prejudice, Hades/Persephone is probably one of my favorite […]

Firekeeper's daughter cover

MANY content warnings but a beautiful depiction of the author’s hometown and culture

Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

December 6, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Content warning: gun death, drug use, addiction, violent sexual assault with disassociation Oooh I am TORN on the review for this one–I feel like this book has so much promise, but at the end of the day there’s just too much going on for the length and reader’s ability to keep up with plot points. This is a beautiful ownvoices story of Daunis, a half-Ojibwe half-French Canadian high school senior living in Sault Ste Marie. From her French Canadian side, she’s the daughter of a […]

Likable and entertaining

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne

December 6, 2021 by Sophia 2 Comments

Second First Impressions (2021) is the third book I’ve read by Sally Thorne. I first heard of The Hating Game through Cannonball and unexpectedly loved it. Because of this, I was very excited when Thorne’s second book, 99 Percent Mine, came out. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my newly raised expectations. However, my memories of The Hating Game were strong enough that as soon as I heard Thorne had written a third book, I scrambled to find it at the library. I generally enjoyed Second First Impressions, but it wasn’t […]

Lavender Blue

The Long Lavender Look by John D. Macdonald

December 5, 2021 by jeverett15 2 Comments

Travis McGee and his friend Meyer are on their way back from a wedding late at night on a dark road when a strange young woman dashes in front of McGee’s beloved car. In his attempt to avoid her, McGee winds up putting his blue Rolls-Royce into the river and thus begins a bizarre series of events which leads to him and Meyer being arrested for Meyer. The set-up looks airtight but with the help of a high-powered lawyer who owes him a favor, McGee […]

The Biography of Remus J. Lupin

All the Young Dudes by MsKingBean89

December 5, 2021 by ElCicco 7 Comments

All the Young Dudes is a work of Harry Potter inspired fanfic that focuses on the relationship between Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, making it what is known as a “Wolfstar” story. Apparently, it is the #1 download on Archive of Our Own (AO3). I first heard about it a couple of weeks ago in this Slate piece, which raved about it. At 188 chapters (and some half a million pages) it is, they say, half as long as all 7 HP novels, and readers, […]
