Soothe Yourself

Dubliners by James Joyce

December 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I’ve always liked Dubliners unironically, even after I was informed that it apparently is something people hated to read in school (maybe that was just my friends, please enlighten me on this). A separate print of The Dead was one of the first books I got from the adult section at my local library, when I was still very much a child and I remember being blown away by the beauty of it. Two or three years ago I finally read the whole book and […]

4, 4 for 4

Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life As A Weapon by Matt Fraction

Death Comes As The End by Agatha Christie

Country Dark by Chris Offutt

Heaven's A Lie by Wallace Stroby

December 8, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Over the weekend and into the early part of this week, I read four books. Each one merited four stars and all were good in their own unique way…   Hawkeye, Vol 1: My Life as a Weapon It’s good. I guess. No really, it’s good. All good. It’s fine. Just…it’s kind of why I don’t read a lot of comics: simplistic hero narratives with twee dialogue. I know this is what everyone wants thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m not sure it’s what […]

Into the Sleeping Beauty-Verse.

A Spindle Splintered (Fractured Fables, #1) by Alix E. Harrow

December 8, 2021 by narfna 6 Comments

This was so fun! I didn’t actually know what this book was really about going in. I knew it was a Sleeping Beauty retelling, and that Alix E. Harrow wrote it, and that was all I needed. So the actual premise was surprising and refreshing! There’s definitely a reason the title for this series of novellas is ‘Fractured Fables.’ Harrow notes in her afterword, she pitched this book to her editor as “I want to Spider-Verse some fairy-tales.” I mean, who can’t get behind that? […]

90s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality by Allison Yarrow

December 8, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

This was a secondary optional pick for one of my IRL book clubs (I’m in two now and it is great; the next person I see making fun of book clubs gets a virtual punch in their sensitive bits—book clubs are friendship, books, and food, fuck you) and I’m glad I read it, although it was a far from a perfect read. When it was on, I really enjoyed it. When it was off, steam came out of my ears. The perspective this book takes […]

Re-reading Mistborn, Part Five

Shadows of Self (Mistborn, #5) by Brandon Sanderson

December 8, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Still love this. Neat to see the pieces set up beforehand. I will be honest with you. I do not want to write this review. Sometimes you just don’t want to make thoughts about the things you love. But I have to write this review, at least 250 words, because of made up commitments that I could totally ignore if I really wanted to (hello, CBR, I cross-posted this to Goodreads!), but instead hold myself to anyway, because apparently doing that is something my subconscious […]

I have finished The Witcher!

Season of Storms (The Witcher, #0.6) by Andrzej Sapkowski

December 8, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I mean, this was fine. It was sort of a nostalgic good time to go back to when the Witcher was just a Witcher and not failing to save the world and failing at being a foster dad simultaneously, and like, tramping around the countryside with vampires and dwarves. We even get some good old fashioned Dandelion/Geralt bonding time. But at the same time, this story (which is set sometime in the middle of the second book of short stories), is also a blatant cash […]
