Run with the Wolves, or Wait for the Bears?

The Last Green Valley by Mark Sullivan

December 15, 2021 by LurkeyTurkey Leave a Comment

I picked this book out from an Audible 2-for-1 sale, and went into it a bit colder than perhaps I should have been.  The basic premise is thus: Catherine the Great brought over a large community of Germans to farm Russia, now known as Ukraine.  The communities were hard working and generationally insular, and though they spoke Russian, they considered themselves to be essentially German.  More importantly, both the Russians and the Nazis considered them to be Germans.  As WWII heated up, many of these […]

Colorful and Challenging Times in Olympus

Lore Olympus volume 1 by Rachel Smythe

December 15, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It seems like one of the favorite Greek myths to retell right now is the story of Hades and Persephone. I know of at least two currently underway on Webtoons: Punderworld and Lore Olympus. The latter recently came out in hard copy book form for the first 25 chapters and also won Goodreads’ Best Graphic Novel or Comic of 2021. I was a little surprised to see it on display at the library (I figured it would be checked out with a waiting list), so […]

“Have a blessed day.”

Calypso by David Sedaris

December 14, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by David Sedaris, but when I saw Calypso (2018) available at the library on Audiobook, I decided it would be the perfect thing to listen to on my commute. I vaguely remember enjoying Sedaris’s other books, but this one might just be my favorite. With stories about his family, his partner, his vacation house, and his eccentricities, I was thoroughly entertained. I especially enjoyed listening to Sedaris read his book. It’s his life, after all, and his timing […]

Honey Badger Don’t Care

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston

December 14, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

Disclaimer! This was an ARC from Netgalley. It has in no way influenced my review.   This is the fourth book in an ongoing series. While this book works on its own, it will be much more enjoyable if you’ve read the first three books in the Honey Badger Chronicles, which start with Hot and Badgered. While the first three books in the Honey Badger Chronicles introduce us to the three MacKilligan sisters Charlie, Stevie, and Max who have different mothers but the same utterly […]

Bring Out Yer Dead!

Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny

December 14, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This was cruising to a 4-star rating and probably the title of my favorite Gamache read. And instead, it lands at 3. Why? A variety of reasons. I liked that most of the action, specifically Gamache’s action, took place outside of Three Pines. I don’t find Three Pines as fascinating as the writer does. Ideally, this series would just take Gamache to different parts of Quebec. Such is life. I also liked that Penny gave Jean-Guy some run. Occasionally, she writes him as too much […]

GoAllieGo is inspiring me…to GO ON VACATION! I am running to my nearest beach, jargarita in hand (a margarita mixed in the BIGGEST mason jar), and cracking into Beach Read as soon as I am able! Thanks again, GoAllieGo! Thanks as well to the lovely faintingviolet for making this whole Book Exchange happen!
