The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

December 31, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

What I have to say about this book can be whittled down to one classic Samuel L. Jackson moment in cinema: And I truly mean that. Anyone with an ounce of empathy will find this one a tough go. Moore extensively researched the women this story is about, and she pulled not only from scholarly books and articles about them, but from their own personal correspondence, journals, and memories from friends and family. The result is that you get a clear picture of just exactly […]

“I don’t sulk; I brood. Like Batman.”

Work For It (Just For Him, #4) by Talia Hibbert

December 31, 2021 by narfna 5 Comments

Perfect book at the perfect time. This is only my second book read out of Talia’s backlist (we are on a first-name basis apparently) and it was just as good as I’d hoped it would be. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, but I probably will now that I’ve met some of the other characters and liked them, and vibe going on here. I don’t know if they will live up to this one, though. I was thisclose to giving this […]

“Learn what your city has forgotten. What men of power have forgotten time and time again, throughout history – that there is always, always something mightier.”

Shorefall (The Founders Trilogy, #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett

December 31, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I feel like Robert Jackson Bennett has a good storyteller’s head on him. I like the way he took the already awesome events of the first book and expanded on them, not just in scope (terrifying bad guy!) but in theme and character as well. This book absolutely 1000% avoids middle-book-in-a-trilogy syndrome. Stuff was happening 20-30% of the way through that you’d expect to happen at the end of a book. Sancia, Gregor, Bernice, and Orso are still together as a little band three years […]

Deeper into the Psy-Changeling world I go

Branded by Fire (Psy-Changeling, #6) by Nalini Singh

Blaze of Memory (Psy-Changeling, #7) by Nalini Singh

Bonds of Justice (Psy-Changeling, #8) by Nalini Singh

Play of Passion (Psy-Changeling, #9) by Nalini Singh

December 31, 2021 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’m completely hooked on Nalini Singh’s expansive Psy-Changeling universe. In this near-future world, the psy run the world with cool efficiency. They have powers ranging from telekinesis to foresight. The Psy have shunned all emotion with the Silence protocol. Any psy who shows emotion is reconditioned, which means a full lobotomy level brain wipe. They go to such extremes because their powers have driven people to homicidal rampages. At the start of the series, a Psy council member wants to partner with the San Francisco […]

A Book that Deserves Much More Buzz than it Received

A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti

December 31, 2021 by The Chancellor 1 Comment

A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti My rating: 5 of 5 stars Wow. This was a powerful book from cover to cover. It’s a slow burn that draws you in and once you get to the reveal you’re so invested you hate to put the book down. We start with a young woman who has experienced a recent trauma and is still putting her life back together from it. What starts out as a run away from her tragedy turns […]

When the Sequel Improves on the First, But Still Leaves Room for Improvement

Infinity Reaper by Adam Silvera

December 31, 2021 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

Infinity Reaper by Adam Silvera My rating: 3 of 5 stars “Infinity Reaper” was a little better than “Infinity Son” when it comes to the characters. We are still in the same world and dealing with the same problems, but the main characters start to have more complex decisions and conflicts to navigate. One of the brothers is still obnoxious and feels really flat to me and the other brother has moments where I’m really rooting for him, only for him to fall into the […]
