The Cannonball Book Exchange is one of my favourite end of the year things. I’m not always super enthusiastic about Christmas (because my family frequently descends into shall we call it loudly enthusiastic disagreements?) and because it’s the coldest, darkest time of the year. Plus, as a teacher, the Christmas holidays pretty much means I’m not AT work, but a lot of my spare time, when I’m not having to work to get everything ready FOR Christmas, or tidied up AFTER Christmas, is spent doing […]

Thank You, Chelz!
I love retellings of classic stories and am so excited you got me A Wish in the Dark. Mosquitoland has also been on my list as a good YA quest-narrative always catches my attention. And that bookmark! I’m a huge fan of sharks so this really made my day. Thank you!
Branching out for my final CBR13 review, and a brief summary of my CBR year
In Too Deep by Daryl Banner
Jonah works a job that is sucking the life out of him in Houston. He works with his best friend Rico and roommate, but that isn’t enough to make his life enjoyable. Jonah and Rico plan a weekend getaway to a fictional Texas beach town to escape the monotony of their lives by having a weekend that would make Dionysus blanche. Their plan is to drink too much, soak up the sun, and find multiple boys to have some fun with for just the weekend. […]

Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog
Like many, my formal education didn’t contain much indigenous history, and certainly almost none about modern indigenous history. Reading Women task 8 was read a memoir by an Indigenous, First Nations, Native, or Aboriginal Woman which helped move Lakota Woman up my TBR (I had added it in 2015 for a similar Read Harder task but I read Rabbit-Proof Fence instead). It certainly didn’t hurt that it was also the Indigenous Reading Circle’s choice for November (the group that inspired the Reading Women task). Lakota […]
A wonderful Bookmas from andtheItoldyousos
andtheItoldyousos is a kindred spirit when it comes to books. We’re Goodreads friends and often have similarish things to say about the literary fiction we’ve read. I’ve been itching to read both of these, and my dreams came true! Thank you!!!!! (Also, this post is badly overdue, because I don’t have my internet act together these days, and I am very sorry about that)
Rosenberg, H-bomb, Sugar Ray, Panmunjom….Brando, “The King and I” and “The Catcher in the Rye”
Act of War: Lyndon Johnson, North Korea, and the Capture of the USS Pueblo by Jack Cheevers
One thing I love about history is that no matter how much you think you know, there’s always something new to uncover. Such was the case, here. I think I have a pretty good handle on 20th century US history. I’m not an academic, by any means, but I’ve done a fair bit of reading. I’ve either never heard of the USS Pueblo, or had forgotten about it until reading this book. Technically speaking, the Korean War never ended. We were all reminded of this […]
