Infinity Son by Adam Silvera
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Imagine the X-men with Phoenixes and you have “Infinity Son”. It’s a world where some people are born with mutant powers and others make themselves mutants using the blood of magical creatures like Phoenixes. There’s a brewing conflict between those that are born with these powers and those that make themselves powerful. You can imagine that those who make themselves powerful are not doing it to better society. Then there’s the regular humans who are afraid of both groups and try and keep them under control which really just makes things worse. The world in this story is really interesting. I was curious about a lot of how this society functions and the different conflicts that exist. The problem I had was with the characters. I’m a very character driven reader; if I can’t connect with a character then I just can’t get into the book. This was the case for “Infinity Son”. I felt like the characters were either over dramatic and the type of people I wouldn’t be around or they were flat and archetypal. The plot moves quickly which helped drive the book along and take some of the weight off the characters, but in the end the book didn’t leave me really connecting with any of the characters.
