Witches of Brooklyn: What the Hex?! (A Graphic Novel) by Sophie Escabasse is the sequel to the Witches of Brooklyn Volume one.
This is a delightful little story that flows well. For the adult reader, it is easy and will take no time to read. Yet, the ages 8 to 13 will be the perfect group to savor every piece. This story is a familiar one about friends and envy, but with the addition of fun, kooky aunts, their equally fun, kooky friends, an oddball pet, lots of cold and a couple of unusual statues, we have a fresh story. And unlike many sequels, this volume is perhaps stronger than the first. It is a full fleshed out story that contains action and adventure and while there are new people added, there is less of the “introductions” and bumps of being the new witch on the blocks. And while the theme is a serious one (dealing with the bumps of growing up, friendship and fitting in) it is a light read that will keep you guessing and giggling.
Good illustrations that complement the fun of the story are on every page. The colors pop and they are bold, sturdy, but not blinding. Yet, they holler out to pay attention to them as Effie and the gang travel around the city doing magic, finding out why things are not working out as planned and there are witches living as bonsai trees.
While it is a standalone tale, it is best to have read the first one. And if you have, and it was a while ago, I recommend reading again as there were a couple of characters, I had forgotten who they were!
