| Two picture books that could not be more different are the subjects of this review. | |
| If you have a more lighthearted need, you can read This Book Will Get You to Sleep. And if you are looking for a more calm and deeper book, try I am the Storm. Both are good books but have a different niche to fill. | |
This book will either put you to sleep or keep you awake. However, since This Book Will Get You to Sleep! is busy, filled with action, noises for the eyes and bright colors, most likely it
will keep you awake. This book is silly and fun. You will love it or hate it. There is little in between. Jory John writes about the reluctant sleeper and the odd things that could get you moving and grooving. Or to pass out in dreamland. Olivier Tallec’s illustrations are filled with minimal but important stuff. Sometimes they can look awkward, but they fit the goofy tone.
Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Stemple created a story that speaks of the weather, emergencies and how resilience comes into play. Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell add to the poetic tone of I Am the Storm with bold, calm, and moving illustrations. The mother and daughter team show our world in a way that helps educate and show how we can deal with the changes around us. We see family, community and the joy that happens even during storms and situations that are out of the ordinary. Husband and wife illustration team add expressive and hopeful illustrations. Words and art come together complementary.
The great thing about picture books is that there is always something for every mood, and boy do these have mood covering potential!
