If making friends was as easy as it was in Making Friends V01 by Kristen Gudsnuk, most of us would never have to be friendless again. Of course, one would have to have some mad skills in drawing to make sure stick figures were not wandering around. Which our main character, Dany, has. Maybe just a little too good!
How do you make a friend? For Dany all it takes is a magic notebook that she has inherited from an eccentric aunt. Just put pen to paper, draw the most perfect BFF ever and BOOM! Madison is “born!” (Never mind the accidently floating head of a manga show villain also brought to life the same way does not like her). Yet, keeping a friend is another story. A story that involves that floating head of the hot manga villain, bullies (sometimes even Dany taking on that role), cool girls, not-so-cool girls, and a lesson in true friendship. This is seventh grade as you have never seen it. Okay, the lockers, hallways and classrooms are the same, but that magic stuff is new.
A manga inspired look, with modern styles, characters, tone to the text, and action, this is at once both humorous and serious. Making Friends takes a subject we all know, have dealt with at least once, and make it relatable for most people ages 10 and up. Some modern themes include such subjects as GLBTQ+, homelessness, foster homes, and students really on the outskirts of school peers. Fans of fantasy, girl power and friendship stories will enjoy this graphic novel.
