Guacamole: Un poema para cocinar / A Cooking Poem is a delightful book length poem and a tribute to the avocado and the guacamole the young narrator loves to make. It is funny, sweet, and informative. The version of Jorge Argueta’s picture book I read was bilingual, therefore, allowing you to read in both English and Spanish. (Or as I did, try and figure out what words were which as to say my Spanish is lacking, is an understatement).
Fun, simple illustrations by Margarita Sada brightly move you along the pages to the end where you can finally indulge in the treat (so to speak!) The colors pop off the page but are not overwhelming. The details are minimal but show you our narrator and family as they create the wonderful guacamole dish. It is just fun and happy. It shows how food brings a family together.
There are asterisks every so often in the text that notes areas in the steps that an adult will be needed to help. This fact is told at the very beginning but did get lost in the version I had as it was on the title page and mixed in with a lot of other text. This made me wish for a more obvious place for it. I would have also enjoyed an actual recipe at the end, but I am sure you can find one you want to use. Still, it is a fun book to read one-on-one or to a group and is really for most ages.
