This was a book passed down to my from my cousin Kelsi (as many of my books are). She told me that it was a fun, easy read and that I would know the ending before I got there. I kept this in my mind the whole time I was reading, thinking I would know exactly what happened before the ending. Turns out, I had no idea. When we talked about it later, she couldn’t believe I didn’t see it coming. I honestly thought this book would turn out much differently; not giving too many spoilers, but I was convinced she would make a different choice in the end.
It was so interesting to really feel her confusion and distress in making her choice; there really was no right or wrong answer to this dilemma she was in, which made it interesting to read. I kept asking myself what I would do in her situation and I honestly had no idea. I loved the family dynamics at play in this, mirroring some of my own. I loved watching how as an adult, how her parents treated her, with just enough guidance but not being overbearing.
If I could have changed anything, I would love have loved more character development of the main character’s friendships. I also would have enjoyed missing the dynamic of the characters all knowing each other from high school, wishing it could have been a little less predictable in that way. Overall, it was an easy read and a calm read, after the scary book I read right before this (Shutter Island). I have heard that the audio version of this book was much better, and I’ve flagged the narrator of the book for future reference.
