Wonder Woman, Volume 3: The Truth by Greg Rucka
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
“The Truth” takes us even further back into the plot that was begun in volumes 1 and 2. It’s a great timeline jump that both flashes back and yet moves the plot forwards. We go deeper into Greek mythology as we meet Ares and Aphrodite’s sons, learn about the patrons of the Amazons and their relationship to the gods, as well as learn more about another villain in the Wonder Woman-verse, Dr. Veronica Cale.
It was really interesting to learn more about Greek mythology. I didn’t know that Ares and Aprhodite had sons and how awful those sons are (although most Greek gods are problematic to begin with, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise). There’s also more development of the Amazons and their conflict with the gods as well as Diana and Steve trying to figure out Diana’s identity problem.
There’s a very interesting interaction between Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League towards the end of the volume. It wasn’t a jolting shift in tone as we were reminded that Wonder Woman is part of a larger group, but it was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed seeing the interaction between all of the characters without having to read a volume of the Justice League itself.
