A short laundry list of picture books is what you’ll find here. These books, while are good, just do not lend themselves for a nice long solo review. I will start off with
two that have a theme to them: A Life Lesson.
A Life Lesson #1 is The Couch Potato by Jory John. This is the fourth in The Bad Seed series by John. It is a cute story about having an indoor and outdoor balance to one’s lifestyle. It is nice to be comfortable and have your “screen times” but it is also nice to be uncomfortable and have adventures outside. And we see these adventures perfectly detailed, colored and shown by Pet Oswald’s illustrations. But when you come in, it is fine to be comfortable on that couch and enjoy a bit of reading Catcher and the Fry.
A Life Lesson #2 is what Jabari learns in Jabari Tries by Gaia Cornwall. This is the second Jabari book. The first being Jabari Jumps. This time Jabari must learn about patience, taking breaks, having a partner and keep trying when the project he takes on does not go as smoothly as planned. Cornwall’s illustrates Jabari (and his little sister) with love and captures the frustrations and glee of children.
A book that I would recommend with the books above, but does not fit the life lesson theme, is A Garden in Your Belly: Meet the Microbes in Your Gut. I say with as it does have a lesson to it as it is a fun way to learn about microbes for the younger crowd. Not too scientific but also the facts are there. Masha D’yans created a book that is poetic, educational and just a nice story. The illustrations are clever and goofy. They are there helping the theme along. Everything is presented in an entertaining manner; making learning a bit easier.
All three books are ones that you will want on your classroom, school and personal library shelves. All ages can enjoy, but the 5 and up crowd might be the best audience.
