I read the first chapter of this book when it first came out, and I think probably because of the Stephen King quote at the beginning “It scared the hell out of me” or something like that.
I didn’t find it to be all that scary, but I do think the last 25-30 pages are incredibly tense and shocking, so I found that incredibly effective. But for most of the rest of the book, I enjoyed it and found it inventive, but not expressly scary.
So the book begins with the interview between the surviving member of a family that was the subject of a reality tv show. She’s 10-15 years on now, being 8 at the time of the show. The show chronicled an affliction of her sister’s who might have been having extreme mental illness, or as the show wanted you to see it, a possession. Well, the show is called “Possession” so you can imagine.
So the book is a few different narratives together. We get the interview of the surviving daughter, we get an analytical cultural blog, and then other smaller pieces that work together to circle around the full story. It’s an effective storytelling structure.
